{"id":275,"date":"2010-10-07T23:52:40","date_gmt":"2010-10-08T05:52:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/benincosa.com\/blog\/?p=275"},"modified":"2014-11-19T11:25:59","modified_gmt":"2014-11-19T17:25:59","slug":"imagex-windows-2008-with-vcenter-server","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/benincosa.com\/?p=275","title":{"rendered":"ImageX Windows 2008 with vCenter Server"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With xCAT I used the imagex capabilities to clone a machine (virtual machine) with vCenter on it and now I&#8217;m installing that captured image to another virtual machine.\u00a0 One reason I do it this way as opposed to creating a VM Template is that now I&#8217;m able to deploy to physical and virtual servers.\u00a0 In addition I can deploy to KVM VMs and VMware VMs.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, when I restarted the cloned disk, I couldn&#8217;t start vCenter Server on it. This is something that I assume happens with all windows images that you run sysprep on regardless or not whether its xCAT induced.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"file:\/\/\/Users\/vallard\/Library\/Caches\/TemporaryItems\/moz-screenshot.png\" alt=\"\" \/>There were a lot of error messages as I trolled through the logs and I searched on all of them:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Windows could not start the VMware VirtualCenter Server on Local Computer.\u00a0 For more information, review the System Event Log.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;the system cannot find the path specified. c:\\Program Files (x86)\\Microsoft SQL Server\\MSSQL.1\\MSSQL\\DATA\\master.mdf&#8221; (odd to me, since the file did actually exist!)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;could not start the SQL Server (SQLEXP_VIM) on Local Computer&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I tried all these google terms with little success:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Virtual Center will not start after reboot&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Finally, I found <a href=\"http:\/\/social.msdn.microsoft.com\/forums\/en-US\/sqldatabaseengine\/thread\/f6b2d439-2b8c-4d93-be18-2774fd5348d0\">this post<\/a>: that finally made sense to me, so I gave it a shot.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s exactly what needs to be done:<\/p>\n<h2>Step 1<\/h2>\n<p>Log into Windows Server 2008 machine and go to &#8216;Services&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/benincosa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/service-1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-277\" title=\"service-1\" src=\"http:\/\/benincosa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/service-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"902\" height=\"630\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Step 2<\/h2>\n<p>Right click on \u2018SQL Server (SQLEXP_VIM)\u2019\u00a0 and click on Properties<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/benincosa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/properties.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-278\" title=\"properties\" src=\"http:\/\/benincosa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/properties.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"784\" height=\"167\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Step 3<\/h2>\n<p>Under &#8216;Log On&#8217; check the Local System account and also check &#8216;Allow service to interact with desktop&#8217;<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/benincosa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/logonas.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-279\" title=\"logonas\" src=\"http:\/\/benincosa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/logonas.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"562\" height=\"219\" \/><\/a>Step 4<\/h2>\n<p>Start the &#8216;SQL Server (SQLEXP_VIM)&#8217; service.\u00a0 It should start up without errors.<\/p>\n<h2>Step 5<\/h2>\n<p>Do the same procedure (Steps 2-4) to the &#8216;VMware VirtualCenter Server&#8217; service.\u00a0 This should now start up and you should be able to connect to Virtual Center.<\/p>\n<p>Well, that wasted about 4 hours of my time, but its nice to have a happy ending.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With xCAT I used the imagex capabilities to clone a machine (virtual machine) with vCenter on it and now I&#8217;m installing that captured image to another virtual machine.\u00a0 One reason I do it this way as opposed to creating a VM Template is that now I&#8217;m able to deploy to physical and virtual servers.\u00a0 In&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[101,39,100,916],"tags":[103,989,102,917],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/benincosa.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/275"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/benincosa.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/benincosa.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/benincosa.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/benincosa.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=275"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/benincosa.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/275\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":2807,"href":"https:\/\/benincosa.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/275\/revisions\/2807"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/benincosa.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=275"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/benincosa.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=275"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/benincosa.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=275"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
