{"id":2924,"date":"2014-12-03T18:13:09","date_gmt":"2014-12-04T00:13:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/benincosa.com\/blog\/?p=2924"},"modified":"2014-12-03T18:13:09","modified_gmt":"2014-12-04T00:13:09","slug":"unauthorized-ucs-invicta-usage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/benincosa.com\/?p=2924","title":{"rendered":"Unauthorized UCS Invicta usage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I had a UCS Invicta that I needed to change from a scaling appliance (where more than one invicta node is managed by several others) to a stand alone appliance. \u00a0I thought this could be done in the field but at this point I don&#8217;t think its an option still. \u00a0The below info is just some things I tried in a lab and I&#8217;m pretty sure are not supported by Cisco.<\/p>\n<p>While the UCS Invicta appliance has had its share of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2014\/01\/30\/has_cisco_made_a_415_million_mistake_whiptail\/\">negative press<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2014\/09\/03\/cisco_us_invicta_off_the_shelves_for_now\/\">setbacks<\/a>, I still have pretty high hopes for this flash array. \u00a0Primarily because the operating system is so well designed for solid state media. \u00a0Its different, full featured, and I think offers a lot of value for anyone in need of fast storage. (everyone?)<\/p>\n<p>First step was to take out the Infiniband card and put in the fibre channel cards. \u00a0I put it in the exact spot the IB card was in.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/benincosa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/IMG_6667.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2925\" src=\"http:\/\/benincosa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/IMG_6667.jpg\" alt=\"putting the FC card in the Invicta\" width=\"3264\" height=\"2448\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>CIMC<\/h2>\n<p>I had to change IP address. \u00a0Booted up. \u00a0Pressed F8, changed the IP address to 10.1.1.36\/24 and didn&#8217;t touch the password.<\/p>\n<p>The default CIMC password to login was admin \/ d3m0n0w! (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cisco.com\/c\/en\/us\/td\/docs\/unified_computing\/ucs\/invicta\/appliance\/c3124sa\/install\/5-0-1-2\/invictac3124sa-install-5012a\/c3124sa-install-5012a-rackinst.html\">source<\/a>)<\/p>\n<h2>Console<\/h2>\n<p>It takes forever to boot up because there is no InfiniBand card in the appliance anymore. \u00a0I took it out and replaced with a fibre channel HBA that came in one of the SSRs that managed the nodes.<\/p>\n<p>The default console user\/password is \u00a0console \/\u00a0cisco1\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cisco.com\/c\/en\/us\/td\/docs\/unified_computing\/ucs\/invicta\/appliance\/c3124sa\/install\/5-0-1-2\/invictac3124sa-install-5012a\/c3124sa-install-5012a-appconnect.html\">source<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>This didn&#8217;t work for me I thought because whoever had the system before me changed it. \u00a0Fortunately for me, this is Linux. \u00a0Rebooted the system and added &#8216;single&#8217; to the grub menu. \u00a0 Yes, I securely compromised the system. \u00a0Such is the power of the Linux user.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/benincosa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/IMG_6674.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2926\" src=\"http:\/\/benincosa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/IMG_6674.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_6674\" width=\"3264\" height=\"2448\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once on the command line I entered the passwd command to change the root password into something I could log in with. \u00a0I took a look at the \/etc\/passwd table and noticed that there was no console user. \u00a0Hmm, guess that&#8217;s why I couldn&#8217;t log in.<\/p>\n<p>I then rebooted.<\/p>\n<h2>Reformatting<\/h2>\n<p>There were three commands that looked pretty promising. \u00a0After digging around I found:<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"lang:default decode:true  crayon-inline \">\/usr\/local\/tools\/invicta\/factoryreset\/<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"lang:default decode:true  crayon-inline \">\/usr\/local\/tools\/invicta\/menu<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0and the accompanying \u00a0<span class=\"lang:default decode:true  crayon-inline \">menu.sh<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0command.<\/p>\n<p>and<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"><span class=\"lang:default decode:true  crayon-inline\">\/usr\/local\/tools\/invicta\/support\/secureWipe.sh <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">I tried all these and then rebooted the system. \u00a0Nothing seemed to indicate any progress as to turning this node into a stand alone appliance. \u00a0I have a few emails out and if I figure it out, I&#8217;ll post an update.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I had a UCS Invicta that I needed to change from a scaling appliance (where more than one invicta node is managed by several others) to a stand alone appliance. \u00a0I thought this could be done in the field but at this point I don&#8217;t think its an option still. \u00a0The below info is just&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[990,570],"tags":[572,571],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/benincosa.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2924"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/benincosa.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/benincosa.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/benincosa.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/benincosa.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=2924"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/benincosa.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2924\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":2927,"href":"https:\/\/benincosa.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2924\/revisions\/2927"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/benincosa.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=2924"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/benincosa.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=2924"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/benincosa.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=2924"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
